Real-World Investigation 5
Math and Interior Design
Use after Lesson 98
Estimating Area
Think about what a room in a home might look like if it were an arcade, filled only with fun games to play. Or think about what a home exercise room might look like if it were filled with equipment you could use to work out. In this activity, you will design your ideal home game or exercise room.

What To Do
The area of the room for your design will be 350 square feet. The room can be any shape, or combination of shapes, you choose. You will also choose the different games or exercise equipment for the room, along with anything else you might need.

Examples

Search Engine Keywords
Use the name of the item you want to include in your room.

Materials
Use an inch or centimeter ruler and a sheet of grid paper, or drawing software if it is available.

Complete the Activity
Make a scale drawing of your room and everything in it. Choose a scale for your map that is sensible. For example, if you use a sheet of grid paper that measures 8 1/2 in. by 11 in. to represent the room, and you choose the scale 1 inch = 10 feet, the paper would represent a room that is 85 feet (8 1/2 × 10) by 110 feet (11 × 10)!

Be sure that each game or piece of equipment can be used without interference from other games, equipment, walls, and so on.

Share Your Work
Share your completed drawings with your classmates.
