Use after Lesson 40
Population Growth
Populations change over time. Population growth, for example, affects ecology, water usage, farmland preservation, and traffic patterns.

What To Do
Research the U.S. population growth. The U.S. Census Bureau provides information on the Internet. Almanacs and/or encyclopedias are another source of population statistics. Use this data to find the current population of the U.S. Analyze the data, then predict when the U. S. population will reach or exceed one billion people.

Materials
Choose an appropriate graph for your data, and then use graphing software or grid paper to make the graph.

Complete the Activity
Write a short article about your prediction. You can use word processing software if it is available. In your article, include one or more reasons for your prediction, and describe any data patterns that you recognized. Also include any environmental issues that you foresee.

Share Your Work
Attach your graph to your article and bring it to class. Your teacher may ask you to present your information to your classmates.
